If you're suggesting that I'm a luddite, I would point out that
you're the one who seems more fearful of technological development.

"Do you really see a distinction between access control and monetary
issues?"

Yes, I do.  Every web publisher has the ability to condition access
on the payment of money, yet very few choose to do this.  So there
is a distinction.

Many of my professors post course materials in .pdf format.  Oh no,
pretty soon they'll be charging me for access.
