I worked at a company in which the most savvy, levelheaded employees were the lawyers. I learned quickly that it was possible to do my job, as it was possible for my superiors to do their jobs, without really understanding rhyme or reason behind the work. This was because there was always a lawyer around to do the explaining. I loved my job, but I knew I couldn’t spend the rest of my work life dependent on the advice of others. I also wanted legal knowledge to color in the broad gaps of my understanding about how the world works. So I applied to law school.
