My grandparents migrated from Dutch Batavia in the early 20th century to Singapore which was then under the control of the British Colonial Office in search of a better life. They worked hard to raise my parents who later met in high school and married. Though none of them had a college degree, they valued education highly. I am the first in the family to have studied in the U.S. for an LL.M degree. Unfortunately, underdevelopment in education and economic challenges still plague many members of my society. What I hope to gain from my time here in New York, therefore, is the ability to facilitate social recovery back home.
