EU Data Retention Directive

Just to counter the argument that the EU would be more 'concerned'
with privacy and its citizens data:

Last year (and ongoing) much debate has been spurred in the EU
regarding the passing of the Data Retention Directive. Under this
directive, ISPs and phone companies are mandated to keep ALL data
records (regarding the web sites you visit and calls you make and
receive) for as long as up to 2 years.

For those interested in the nitty gritty, there's a lot out there on
this topic. Some initial info can be found here: http://www.iht.com/
articles/2005/12/14/business/data.php

More profound analysis as well as original documents can be found on
the European Digital Rights organisation website: http://
www.edri.org/. Just search for "data retention".
