Personal Introduction

"Who were we? Who were our people? We knew so little. The American experience, the focus on individual achievement, the acquisition of goods and money to prove one's social value, is built on this sense of loss, this alienation from the warmth of the home culture, isolation from genetic bonds. This separation from one's tribe creates an inner loneliness that increases as one ages. There is in many people, especially immigrants, a burning need to complete the puzzle, to find the missing pieces. And what did it do to us, growing up as outsiders, as part of no place... [with] the sense that we were different and somehow tainted?" Annie Proulx, Bird Cloud 20 (2011).

I moved away from home-a sunny, Mexican-infused Los Angeles-almost eight years ago. In those years, I went to college, worked in DC, and started law school. Staying away was my way of growing up on my own terms to become more than a putative American anchor baby. I came to the law because I want to respond to injustice, not just take note of it. And maybe, I'll make it back to California someday.

I still hope to fulfill my childhood career aspirations to be a: reporter, Agent Scully, flautist, public servant, scholar, textile designer...

These are the questions that always follow me. I hope the life I lead as a lawyer will be a part of my response, not my stumbling block.
